Allium cepa
Shallots, otherwise known as small onions belong to the species Allium cepa. Shallots have milder taste and are less pungent than red onions. They are eaten fresh or cooked, chopped or boiled. Shallots have a delicate onion flavour when cooked, that adds to, but does not overpower other flavours. Just like garlic and onions, shallots offer amazing health benefits. Shallots share the same antioxidant properties as garlic. They are particularly rich in minerals, vitamins and trace elements and also contain phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, manganese, iron and copper.
